Resin Bound Stone In Bournemouth

Wondering What Actually Goes Down When You Choose Resin?

The Smooth, Permeable Natural Stone Surface Behind Every Resin Driveway, Patio And Path

Resin bound stone is the material itself - natural aggregate mixed with a clear resin and trowelled down to a flat, seamless finish that water drains straight through. It is what a resin driveway, a resin patio and a resin path are all made from. Get the stone and the resin right and you have a surface that holds its colour through Bournemouth's strong coastal sun and stays looking new for two decades. Get them wrong and it fades, sheds stone or puddles.

We install resin bound stone across Bournemouth and Poole for every kind of outdoor surface, using UV-stable resin systems and quality washed aggregate. Every job starts with a free site visit and sample boards, and comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee.

Why Resin Bound Stone Works On The South Coast

Natural Stone That Keeps Its Colour

The aggregate is natural, so its colour does not fade. Bound in a UV-stable resin, the whole surface holds its look through years of the direct sun that Bournemouth gets more of than most of the UK - no yellowing binder, no dulling.

Drains Instead Of Puddling

Water passes through the surface into the sub-base rather than running off. On the flat coastal plots common across Bournemouth and Poole, that means no standing water against the house and no need to plumb in extra drainage for a front garden.

No Loose Stone To Scatter

Every piece of aggregate is fully encapsulated in the resin, so unlike loose gravel it stays put. Nothing gets kicked onto the lawn, tracked into the house, or flung up by tyres. The finish stays smooth and even underfoot.

One Material, Every Surface

The same resin bound stone works for a driveway, a patio, a garden path or a pool surround, so you can run one colour and finish across the whole property for a joined-up look rather than a patchwork of different materials.

Handles Salt Air

Near the seafront - Boscombe, Southbourne, Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs - salt in the air corrodes and stains some surfaces over time. Resin bound stone is inert; the aggregate is sealed in resin and does not react to salt exposure.

Almost No Maintenance

No joints for weeds, no sand to top up, no re-pointing. The joint-free surface needs little more than an occasional sweep and rinse to stay looking as it did on the day it went down.

What Makes A Good Resin Bound Stone Surface

Two surfaces can look identical on the day they are laid and be worlds apart five years later. The difference is in the specification, and it comes down to three things: the resin, the aggregate, and the base beneath.

The resin has to be UV-stable polyurethane. Cheaper binders yellow under sunlight, which matters more here than inland - a south-facing Bournemouth surface takes a harder UV load than almost anywhere in the country. The aggregate should be properly washed and kiln-dried, mixed at the correct ratio by weight rather than judged by eye, so every stone bonds and none work loose. And the sub-base has to be permeable and sound, because the resin takes on the behaviour of whatever it sits on.

Get all three right and the surface lasts 20 years or more. It is the same material used for our resin bound driveways and resin patios - specified to suit each job.

Most people who ask us about resin bound stone are surprised to learn the same material does the driveway, the path and the patio - and that running one colour across all three usually costs less than mixing surfaces.

Our 10-Year Guarantee

Every resin driveway, pathway or patio we install comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee covering the installation itself. That's not a figure we picked because it sounds good - it reflects what a correctly installed resin bound surface on a properly prepared sub-base is actually expected to last.

The guarantee is only worth something if the groundwork is right. Every job starts with a proper site assessment, and we'll always tell you upfront if the existing base needs more work before resin goes down - rather than cutting corners and hoping for the best. We don't subcontract: the team who quote your job are the team who install it.

What Our Customers Say

Feedback from homeowners across Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding area.

"Really pleased with the driveway. We had an old cracked concrete drive that had been an eyesore for years. The team turned up on time, kept the site tidy, and the finished result looks great. The buff colour with the charcoal border was their suggestion and it suits the house perfectly."

Sarah M.

Poole

"Used Resin Driveways Bournemouth for a patio and side path. Couldn't fault them - straightforward quote, no pushy sales, turned up when they said they would and finished on time. The grey finish on the patio looks brilliant and is so easy to keep clean."

James T.

Bournemouth

"Had three quotes and went with these guys because they took the time to explain exactly what they were doing and why. The driveway has been down six months now and still looks brand new. Would recommend without hesitation."

Karen H.

Christchurch

"Had the driveway and the front path done at the same time. The guys matched the colour through from the drive to the path so it all flows nicely. Good value, well finished, no mess left behind."

Dave R.

Ferndown

"The patio at the back of our house was in a terrible state - old sunken slabs with weeds everywhere. The resin is a completely different level. Comfortable to walk on, no weeds, and it drains properly after rain. Wish we'd done it years ago."

Resin Bound Stone Costs In Bournemouth

Resin bound stone typically costs in the region of £100-£300 per square metre, depending on the surface, the aggregate blend, and how much groundwork the base needs. Resin Bound Stone FAQs

What is resin bound stone?

Resin bound stone is a surfacing material made by mixing natural aggregate with a clear polyurethane resin, then trowelling the blend onto a prepared base to a smooth, flat finish. Every piece of stone is fully coated and locked into the resin, which is what gives the surface its smooth finish and stops it shedding loose stone. Because there are tiny gaps between the coated stones, water drains straight through, so the finished surface is permeable. It is the same material whether it is used for a driveway, a patio or a garden path - only the depth and sub-base change with the application.

Is resin bound stone the same as a resin driveway?

A resin driveway is resin bound stone laid at driveway depth on a sub-base built to carry vehicles. So they are the same material, used in different ways. People tend to search for 'resin bound stone' when they are thinking about the surface itself - the aggregate, the colour, the finish - rather than one specific use for it. We install resin bound stone across Bournemouth for driveways, patios, pathways, pool surrounds and commercial areas, all using the same core material specified to suit the job.

What aggregate colours are available in resin bound stone?

There is a wide range of natural aggregate blends - buff and golden gravels, silver and mid greys, charcoal, autumn browns, and mixed blends that combine several tones. The stone is natural, so the colour does not fade; what matters is that the resin binding it is UV-stable, otherwise the binder yellows over time and dulls the whole surface. On the south coast, where Bournemouth gets some of the highest sunshine hours in the UK, UV stability is more important than almost anywhere else. We bring physical sample boards to every site visit so you can see the blends in natural coastal light against your own property.

Does resin bound stone let water through?

Yes. Correctly laid resin bound stone is permeable - water drains through the surface and into the sub-base below rather than running off. This is why it does not require planning permission for a front garden in the way an impermeable surface over 5m² does, and why it does not leave puddles. The permeability depends on the sub-base being built correctly with open-graded stone; a resin surface laid over solid concrete without drainage designed in will not drain properly, which is one of the things we check on the site visit.

How long does resin bound stone last?

A correctly installed resin bound stone surface on a properly prepared base should last 20 to 25 years. The lifespan comes down to two things: the quality of the resin system and the sub-base underneath. A UV-stable resin holds its finish through the strong south coast sun, and a sound permeable sub-base stops the surface cracking or moving. We back every installation with a 10-year workmanship guarantee covering the preparation and laying.

Can resin bound stone be laid over an existing surface?

In many cases, yes. If the existing concrete or tarmac is sound, level and draining adequately, resin bound stone can be laid over it after cleaning and priming, which saves the cost of digging out. If the base is cracked, moving or holding water, it needs lifting and a new permeable sub-base installing first, because the resin will reflect any faults in what it sits on. We assess this on the free site visit and tell you honestly which approach your surface needs.

Is resin bound stone slippery when wet?

No more than any other hard surface, and generally less. The natural aggregate gives a textured, grippy finish, and because the surface is permeable it does not hold a film of surface water for the algae that makes flat slabs slippery to grow on. For areas where extra grip matters - a sloped Bournemouth driveway, or steps - the aggregate size and blend can be chosen to increase traction further.
